Do the new USB laws affect your business? | What British employees think about the USB C

“It’s time for THE charger.”

On the 28th of December 2024, the European Commission sent a tweet announcing their new directive taking effect. Across Europe, the USB C is becoming the required standard and seemingly the future of technology. There are many benefits to adopting a universal charging cable, including saving money on buying additional cables and other environmental gains.

The implementation of a universal USB C charger under the new EU regulations marks a significant shift in the way electronic devices are powered and charged.

In CMD’s recent survey, we asked the British public their thoughts on the new USB regulations, including the potential benefits, and which USB connector they would prefer in the workplace.

What are the new USB regulations in the EU?

The implementation of a USB universal standard has been in the pipeline since 2022, when the transition period was approved by the EU Council. The USB C charger was chosen due to its reversibility and fast charging capabilities. Its small and versatile connector transfers data at high speeds, and is ideal for electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, and laptops.

From December 2024, the European Union has adopted the “Common Charger Directive”, requiring all new mobile phones and portable electronic devices to support USB C charging. Becoming the common standard in the EU for charging devices, prioritising the USB C is set to reduce e-waste and offer better charging technology.

The UK government has stated there are no immediate plans to implement a common charger. However, a call for evidence was conducted towards the end of 2024 to determine the potential impacts and benefits of this conversion, and ultimately, whether the UK should transition to a common charger based on the USB C.

Though British businesses and employees are not affected by the new USB regulations, it’s important to remain vigilant about the changing laws. It is looking likely that the UK will be following suit over the next few years, particularly as more countries, such as India (the second largest smartphone market), are making plans to standardise the USB C requirement.

What are the benefits of implementing one universal charger?

The European Union’s recent mandate for a universal charger offers several notable advantages. With a standardised USB-C port, users can charge various devices, such as mobile phones, tablets, and headphones, using a single charger, regardless of the device brand. This simplification means that when travelling, users are more likely to find compatible charging options, reducing the hassle of carrying multiple chargers.

Another significant benefit is the reduction of electronic waste. In Europe, discarded and unused chargers contribute approximately 11,000 tonnes of e-waste every year. By incorporating just one charger, the new legislation will help reduce the industry’s environmental footprint.

When asked, the majority of British respondents (91%) believe there are benefits to having one common charger, with only 2% saying there were no benefits whatsoever:

USB C is a powerful, fast charger, perfect for busy commercial spaces and workplaces. Implementing it as a universal charger will help ensure consistent charging speeds across all devices, which is perfect for collaborative areas.

This standardisation eliminates disparities in charging performance and enhances the overall user experience.

How can the USB C universal charger impact the workplace?

It’s not just mobile phones and other small electronic devices (such as tablets and keyboards) that are evolving. From April 2026, the EU will also implement the new legislation to include laptops. Across the European Union, this will alter the vast majority of workplaces. Although nothing has been confirmed in the UK, business owners should consider implementing USB C charging capabilities to future-proof their space and address their employees’ concerns.

The introduction of the USB C universal charger in line with EU regulations is set to bring significant improvements to the workplace.

When asked, 91% of British employees agreed that one standardised USB would be beneficial in the workplace:

One of the most immediate benefits is the reduction in cable clutter, as employees will no longer need different chargers for various devices. A standardised charging solution simplifies shared office spaces, allowing for a more organised and efficient work environment.

The universal charger enhances collaboration throughout the workplace. With a single charging standard, employees can easily borrow or share chargers, ensuring that devices remain powered without the frustration of incompatible cables. This is particularly beneficial in flexible work and hot-desking settings.
