Though most employees have returned to the office after adopting a remote work schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are still experiencing the repercussions through office design. Workplaces are continuously evolving to meet the demands of the industry and their employee’s needs.

From the incorporation of technology such as USB-type requirements to making a working environment feel more comfortable and similar to home settings, businesses should consider the future of office design to ensure that both their employees are satisfied and that they do not get left behind.

Traditionally, offices consisted of set desks, either in a row or in cubicles. There didn’t seem to be a lot of variety available, particularly in areas where employees could work away from their desks for a break. More modern offices incorporate collaboration areas, dedicated to giving workers a space not at desks. However, is this the future of office design? And what do UK employees think?

When asked, 35% of respondents would like to work in a flexible working environment, whereas 32% preferred more of a traditional office layout:

stats on flexible environments

Although the responses seem split between traditional and flexible working environments, there is a clear divide if you analyse the age groups. Most respondents over 55 preferred traditional office settings, such as allocated desks and closed-plan layouts (44%). However, younger employees between 25 and 44 would rather work in a flexible office environment, for example, in an open-plan layout (62%).

What do employees think of how to improve their office layout?

If you want to update your office layout, consider surveying employees to grasp at what they believe would be beneficial. This can help you understand whether a traditional office layout or a more flexible working environment may be preferable.

When asked, the majority of respondents would like improved communal areas and flexible options for working away from the desk:

What should you include in your office design?

According to many sources, including a recent Forbes article, the future of office design currently revolves around creating unique areas to work, such as spaces that serve multiple functions.

When asked, most of our respondents would like to see more collaborative spaces in the office:

workspace desires

Many respondents wished for more places to work away from their desks, including meeting rooms and break-out spaces like pods. Although break-out spaces may need a complete office rebuild, particularly if a unit needs to be built, ensuring there is power is simple.

To ensure these areas are functional, it is important to designate power distribution and workstation power modules. In a collaborative area, there should be enough power for multiple people and devices. This may include USB A and USB C ports, as well as UK sockets.

Our top pick for multi-functional workstation power:

Capsule Plus

The Capsule Plus is supplied with a c-clamp to mount onto desks between 11mm and 30mm thickness. Available in black or white, this on-desk power module is perfectly capable of ensuring connectivity for several users in collaborative settings.

One of the other points UK employees requested was the induction of ergonomic office products in the office. Ergonomics has become increasingly popular and recognised as an important factor in the workplace. Improving the workstation to help an employee’s wellbeing is essential for helping productivity and creating a safe environment in the office.

That’s why it is crucial for business owners to consider how their workstations are set-up, and if there is way to improve them.

Our top pick for an ergonomic monitor arm:

Vision heavy-duty monitor arm

The Vision heavy-duty monitor arm is a versatile ergonomic product that supports two screens. The adjustable height means that employees can change their screens to accommodate their requirements and work in a healthy and ergonomic way.

provided equipment stats

As a business owner, it is expected that you prioritise your employees’ health and ensure that the workplace is a healthy environment. This may mean focusing on how the office is laid out, and if the design can be improved in any way. Putting your employees’ needs first can help improve your brand’s reputation and make the company a good place to work, attracting potential customers, future employees, and business partners.
