As society continues to advance, office layouts and designs often change depending on new technologies. Though the idea of wireless charging has been around since the late 1800s, it’s only the 21st century that has seen a rise in this technology, both in daily life and the workplace. A pivotal question in contemporary office design is whether wireless devices, particularly wireless charging equipment, represent the future and should be implemented more extensively.
Wireless charging operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction, using a power transmitting pad and a receiver, embedded in devices such as phones, laptops, and tablets. But understanding the technology may not be the first thought. People need to know that this technology is worth it, making things more convenient, particularly in a workspace.
We’ve conducted original research into what the British public thinks about wireless charging, its implementation in offices, and any alternatives to consider.

What does the British public think of wireless charging in today’s society?
As more devices are being manufactured with the latest technological advancements, smartphones and tablets are often now being built to be compatible with QI wireless charging, including popular models from Apple, Samsung, LG, and Google. Research into the wireless charger market has found future projections on the rise by 2032 and a focus on goals for businesses to start implementing the technology into their general upkeep.
When asked, the majority of respondents stated that their workplace did not feature wireless (such as mouse, keyboard, or lights for example), or wireless charging equipment:
Does your workplace include any wireless charging or wireless equipment?
With over half of respondents (52%) saying no or that they were unsure (19%), it is safe to say that the current status of wireless charging has not instantly kicked off in the UK. Though it remains popular in certain places, such as restaurants and airports, office workers have stated that this technology has not been implemented as of yet. Only 19% of all respondents said that their office included wireless phone charging.
However, this does not mean it cannot become an office staple. It is important to address both the pros and cons of wireless phone charging, and whether it can positively impact employee’s wellbeing and productivity.

Should wireless charging be featured more in workplaces?
Wireless charging in the workplace offers several advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, it significantly reduces desk clutter, creating a cleaner, more organised workspace that enhances productivity and aesthetics.
This technology also supports flexible working environments, allowing employees to move freely without being tethered to a specific desk or power outlet. Moreover, it simplifies the charging process, adding a modern and sophisticated touch to the office design.
When asked, the majority of respondents (47%) said that they do not believe their productivity could be improved by wireless charging:
Do you think your workplace’s productivity could be improved with wireless charging?
Though the technology has continued to develop, there are notable drawbacks to wireless charging, particularly when used in the workplace. Despite fast charging becoming a pivotal goal, wireless charging is slower than its wired counterpart, which is inconvenient for those who need a quick boost. Reliability can be another concern, with precise placement required for effective charging, leading to potential interruptions.
Yet, the research shows that a large percentage would like the inclusion of wireless devices (27%) or are unsure about the matter (25%). There is an opportunity here to change opinions about the office layout and create more flexible and ergonomic options for working.
Wireless office products vs cable management systems | Which is better for your workplace?
Ensuring your employees wellbeing and what they believe will be beneficial is key for productivity in the office. To help with daily workload, consider implementing the right tools and office equipment.
If you are still unsure of what would benefit your employees, conduct your own research to see specifically what they would want, which can include wireless devices or alternatives.
When asked, the majority of respondents would like to see a mixture of both wireless devices and an ergonomic cable management system in their workplace:
Would you rather have wireless products in the office or an efficient cable management system?
The choice between wireless products and cable management ultimately depends on the office’s specific needs and priorities of the office. Wireless products, such as keyboards, mice, or charging pads, may appeal more to those seeking a modern, flexible workspace, while cable management remains a practical, reliable solution for those prioritising efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
For wireless charging, consider the inclusion of power modules in places to improve connectivity. This may include meeting rooms, pods, breakout spaces, and other flexible working areas in the office.
